The Novaline weighted blankets can be used all year round for a good night's rest, including in summer. Yet, we often receive questions about using weighted blankets in summer. To clear up any uncertainty about using a weighted blanket in summer, we answer these questions in this article.

Can you use a weighted blanket during summer?

A weighted blanket, also called a weighted cover, can also be used in summer. Many people think the weight of a weighted blanket makes it warmer, but this is not the case. A weighted blanket is not warm; rather, it takes on the temperature of your body.

Is a weighted blanket suitable for warm weather?

Yes, a weighted blanket is suitable for warm weather. The filling of the weighted blanket makes it heavier and helps you fall asleep faster. The filling is naturally cool and will take on your body temperature. This means the blanket stays nearly the same temperature in both summer and winter. Additionally, the outside of the weighted blanket is made of breathable cotton, so it hardly ever becomes too warm.

In terms of warmth rating, our weighted blanket for adults is comparable to class 2 of a ‘normal’ double blanket. Of course, when it is really warm, a weighted blanket, like any other blanket, can also become too warm. If you still want to experience the calming effect, read the next paragraph to learn what to do to sleep comfortably under a weighted blanket even in very warm weather.

What can you do to sleep comfortably under a weighted blanket in summer?

If you want to use a weighted blanket in summer, we recommend using a good bamboo cover. These covers ventilate three times better than cotton. This will make the blanket feel cooler.

Is the blanket really too warm? For example, if it is more than 32 degrees outside. Then we recommend lying under the blanket just before going to bed, for instance while watching TV on the couch. Even then, a weighted blanket works the same; you will calm down from the pressure on your body. Once you are calm, you will find it easier to fall asleep under just a sheet, experience a better night's rest, and wake up refreshed.

What should you pay attention to when buying a weighted blanket for summer?

There are several aspects to consider when buying a weighted blanket for summer.

The material

For example, make sure the cover of the blanket is not made of polyester. This is often the case with replica models. Polyester breathes poorly, causing the blanket to feel warm quickly. A good weighted blanket has a cotton cover. This cotton, certified with OEKO TEX, is breathable, allowing the blanket to be used all year round.

How the blanket is woven

Also, check that the weighted blanket has diagonal, small pockets for optimal weight distribution. These will spread the weight so the blanket is not too thick anywhere.

The quality

High, luxurious quality blankets should feel soft and show no signs of unevenness in color or finish. The price tag can also be an indicator of quality. If the price of the blanket seems too good to be true, it is likely it will not last the season.

Other usual features of a good quality weighted blanket are: loops on the blanket to attach covers and the option to try sleeping with it, so you can test the blanket.

Are weighted blankets for children suitable during summer?

Children and adults can use a weighted blanket in summer. For children, the rule is: a child must always be able to remove the weighted blanket by themselves. So make sure to choose the right weight weighted blanket. Special weighted blankets for children have been developed for this purpose.

If your child finds the weighted blanket too warm, for example when it is more than 30 degrees, you can also let your child lie under the blanket in the evening before going to bed. This way, he or she will also experience the positive effect and feel comfort and safety. When your child has calmed down, you can let him or her sleep in bed under just a sheet.

Can you use a weighted blanket in summer and winter?

As you read above, you can very well use our weighted blanket in summer. With the help of a good bamboo protective cover, you ensure the blanket is airy and not too warm.

In winter, you want some extra warmth from the weighted blanket. In this case, you can choose a winter cover. If this is not enough, we recommend placing an extra duvet over or under your weighted blanket. This way, the weight of the weighted blanket will still press on your body, and you will have more warmth from your extra duvet.

Can I try the weighted blanket in summer?

You can always try sleeping under Novaline weighted blankets for 100 days. During this period, you can test the weighted blanket. If you do not like the weighted blanket, you can simply return it.

Extra tips for sleeping well in warm weather

As you read above, you now know that a weighted blanket also helps you fall asleep more easily in summer. But in warm weather, you might sometimes need a few extra tips to sleep well. Here are a few from us:

1. Sleep without clothing

The best and simplest way to keep your body as cool as possible is to sleep naked. This way, you do not suffer from clothing that traps heat. If you prefer not to sleep naked, make sure to wear something light when you sleep. For example, choose a loose cotton nightshirt.

2. Keep distance from your partner

Do you sleep with your partner in one bed? On warm days, make sure to keep enough distance. This may sound less romantic, but it is necessary on warm days to fall asleep better. Your body is a source of heat. Your partner’s body can therefore feel like a heater on warm summer days.

3. Sleep low to the ground

Warm air rises. The higher you lie, the warmer the air is. Therefore, when it is warm, sleep as close to the ground as possible.

4. Place a glass of water next to your bed

In warm weather, it is important to stay well hydrated throughout the day. A good fluid level naturally cools your body. Therefore, place a glass of water next to your bed and take a sip when you are thirsty.

5. Use your fan wisely

If you have a fan, do not just turn it on. Moving warm air does not cool your bedroom much. Place the fan by your open window and point it outside. This keeps the warm air out and keeps your bedroom nice and cool. If you prefer not to sleep with your window open, you can place a bowl of ice in front of your fan. This will spread the cool air.

6. Take a refreshing shower before bedtime

Is your body warm and sticky from the heat during the day? Do not go to sleep before taking a refreshing shower. Be careful not to shower too cold. Cold water causes the body to work hard to warm up again, which has the opposite effect. Choose a lukewarm shower instead.

Do you find it hard to fall asleep on warm days? With the purchase of a weighted blanket and the above tips, you will experience a good night's rest again.
